As the cold sets in, many people are starting to think about getting some extra insulation installed in their attic. That is a great idea! What many people DON’T know, is that something even MORE important is to make sure that all of the drafts in their ceiling are sealed up properly. There are 2 reasons for this: 1, to prevent the hot air from going through the roof (literally), and 2, to help with the indoor air quality.

Energy Star Air Seal

Think of a hot air balloon. It rises because the warm air rises above the cool air. The same happens in our homes. The Hot air rises, and escapes through the gaps and cracks in the ceiling. The air must be replaced through cold, outside air, through, doors, windows, and other cracks in the home. (Which has to be reheated)

When air is coming in/out of the ceiling, we are allowing dust/dirt/allergens/etc. to come into the home from inside the attic. By stopping the airflow in and out of the home through the attic, we can better control where our ‘new’ (fresh) air is at.

Air seal is the most basic of all the possible efficiency upgrades to do on a home. It also has the fastest payback period. If you want money savings as well as comfort, make sure to seal your home, THEN add the insulation

"Minimum Code" for Passive Ventilation

In this Picture, you see that the ventilation underneath is approximately 25 square inches. (5″ x 5″, being generous) In the Picture below you see that the free area of the circle is approximately 250 square inches. (Approximately 9″ radius”

Not Only is it easier for the air to flow, but it also uses a 5-bladed fan that is powered by the sun to actually PULL the Hot air our of the attic in the summertime.

Since this is a new site, I would like some critique. What do you like about the website? What would you change? This is a work-in-progress, so any good advice helps.
